30409A CHARITY manager is leading by example and using pedal power to kick off a fundraising drive.
Barnardo's worker Christine Robinson, 50, who is responsible for the Trowbridge-based Wiltshire Children's Fund, is to take on the challenge of a 270-mile sponsored bike ride from London to Paris.
She said: "I have never done anything more than a one day sponsored cycle ride or the occasional trip with my family, so this will be a genuine challenge."
Barnardo's is this year celebrating everything that has been achieved since the death of its founder, Dr Thomas Barnardo, in 1905.
The charity is asking staff to come up with centenary challenges and Mrs Robinson will be joined by several colleagues from across the country when she sets off on her bike. Her aim is to raise at least half of the £1,000 target set by her team.
She is training several times a week to prepare herself for cycling an average of 80 miles a day. "It will be a true test of endurance. However, I am really looking forward to the trip through the French countryside and seeing the Eiffel Tower at the end," she said.
Mrs Robinson would be glad to hear from any sports or cycling shops that can provide suitable equipment and from anyone who would like to sponsor her.
She can be contacted at the Wiltshire Children's Fund on (01225) 768684.
