SWINDON Council is to close an important Old Town alleyway for the second time around six months.
The alleyway between Wood Street and Joiner Lane will close for six weeks from April 18 to May 30 to allow building contractors to carry out work.
Pedestrians are being advised to take an alternative route via Devizes Road.
The alleyway was last closed in October 2004 for a month so council workers could carry out maintenance.
Last year the Evening Advertiser reported that several Old Town businesses, including some in Godwin Court, suffered from a downturn when the alleyway was shut.
The alley is used by shoppers parking in Godwin Court to get to Wood Street and by people in Wood Street to get to the Godwin Court shops.
Some businesses said they had experienced a drop in takings when it came to the closure because many customers were not willing to take an indirect route.
Gallery 39 in Godwin Court went bust at the end of last year, which owner Kevin Money, blamed partly on the closure.
