DJ Sandy Martin with some of our favourite tunes Picture Ref: 76982-22SWINDON'S favourite dance floor filler is Living on a Prayer by rockers Bon Jovi.

The insight comes from a survey of clubbers in the town by pub chain Walkabout.

They were asked to say which song would be most likely to make them head for the dance floor.

At the Swindon Walkabout Pub in Fleet Street, drinkers agreed that six-pack sporting Aussie crooner Peter Andre's Mysterious Girl and Euro popster Whigfield's Saturday Night had the musical magic to get them up on the dance floor.

The survey formed part of a nationwide search to track down the top ten toe tappers.

In the national list, I Want You Back, by the Jackson 5, which reached number two in the charts in 1970, topped the poll.

Walkabout asked almost 5,000 people across the country to find their favourite dance tracks.

The list also included Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.

Only Peter Kay and Tony Christie's current charity single (Is This The Way to) Amarillo, and the Proclaimers made their way on to both lists.

Sandy Martin, of BBC Radio Swindon, has been a DJ in the town for more than 25 years.

He began his career in Swindon at the Brunel Rooms in 1979.

He said: "It had one of the biggest dance floors in the country, and therefore one of the best.

"To keep it full you had to have a good playlist.

"There were about 1,200 people five nights a week right through the 80s, and it was jumping every night.

"It really was the place to go. Where everyone from Swindon met up. The first song I played when I started in 1979 was Boogie Wonderland by Earth Wind and Fire.

"The first words I said was 'Welcome to the Brunel Wonderland."

Sandy remembers fondly the era when Two Tone music was popular.

He said: "When I played songs like One Step Beyond, by Madness, or Too Much Too Young, by the Specials, the whole floor would be buzzing.

"It looked amazing. There was condensation running down the walls."

From the 80s, Sandy recommends The Only Way Is Up, by Yazz.

He said: "And more recently Take Me Out, by Franz Ferdinand, has a great guitar lick."
