POLICE have revealed there were nearly 100 attacks on Swindon officers last year and they say it will not be tolerated.

Supt Paul Williams of Swindon police blasted the figures as totally unacceptable.

The revelation follows a report in yesterday's late edition of the Adver about an attack on a female police officer.

Supt Williams said: "Police officers are public servants who very often put their own safety on the line to ensure the security of the public they serve.

"Police officers regularly demonstrate great courage and bravery but, like any other individuals, they too suffer the emotional and physical injuries that an assault brings.

"Unfortunately, recovery from these sorts of incidents can mean individuals are off work for a period of time and this has obvious impact in terms of resilience.

"We certainly do not tolerate assaults on our officers and we look to the courts to take a strong stance in this respect."

Last year saw 98 assaults on Swindon police officers.

Supt Williams said: "This is totally unacceptable because whenever police officers are absent we are unable to operate at full capacity and morale can be undermined." Yesterday we reported how drunken thug Christopher Jones dumped a policewoman on her head as he tried to get away after officers had been called to a domestic bust up.

WPC Sally Fellows suffered great distress after the incident shortly before midnight on Friday, May 28 last year.

Although she only suffered a minor head injury in the attack by the 22-year-old the officer said it caused great anguish.

Jones, of Edington Close, Freshbrook, pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm.

Judge Tom Longbotham adjourned sentencing and released Jones on bail.
