Children at Salt Way Primary School, in Middleaze, which faces closure, will now be able to play footy whatever the weather with the introduction of a wall by the concrete playground.
And ex-Town striker Iffy Onura was on hand to cut the ribbon on the wall.
Earlier this month Swindon councillors voted in favour of closing the school because of a surplus of places at West Swindon schools.
But acting headteacher Penny Wood is determined to make it a good year for the pupils.
"We've been trying to get the wall up for two years now. This is great. It will take their minds of what is going on with the school. Our kids love playing football and when it's wet it's not always possible because they can't go on the field. We wanted to improve the playground facilities."
Iffy, 37, who now coaches the Swindon Town youth team, said: "It's really good to see all these kids enjoying themselves. "Football is a social tool and it brings children together so it's nice to see this happening.
Four-year-old Joseph King was looking forward to having a shot at the wall.
He said: "I like football. I like Swindon Town and I want to kick the ball at that wall."
