Pervert could be jailed for life

The 44-year-old groomed the children before carrying out depraved acts on them at his home in Eldene.

But after being convicted of sex offences against children for the third time Taylor, who has twice changed his name, could land behind bars for life.

Taylor showed no emotion as the verdicts of guilty were read out by the foreman of the jury at Swindon Crown Court.

While he was cleared of two indecent assaults on a 15-year-old boy he was found guilty on Monday of carrying out a third assault while the teenager watched Power Rangers on a wide screen TV in Taylor's bedroom.

Yesterday the jury convicted him of four counts of sexual activity with a person with a mental disorder impeding choice.

Taylor targeted a disabled boy who he met in the street close to his home in Stubsmead, Eldene.

The boy, though 16 at the time, only had a mental age of eight or nine and used to like visiting the man he told police was his 'best friend'.

The jury heard that Taylor would always make sure the lad had checked with his parents that it was all right to be at his house.

But once there he allowed the child to smoke, against his parents wishes, and then suggested he remove his top so he wouldn't get cigarette ash on it and it wouldn't smell of smoke when he went home.

Taylor was finally caught on a Friday in July last year when the boy returned home from Taylor's house with wet hair and smelling of aftershave.

When his mum asked him what had happened he first said that he had washed his hair in the shower at Taylor's and then claimed he had touched him. But his parents were suspicious and called the police.

Interviewed by police he told of sex attacks on Taylor's bed and in the shower.

A second boy then came forward and told how he had first met Taylor as a 14-year-old when he took the same route home as him when he was living on Welcombe Avenue, Park North.

The boy used to cadge cigarettes from Taylor but they lost touch only to run into each other more than a year later when the victim was aged 15-years-old.

After speaking to each other following the chance meeting in the Parks, Taylor and the boy, who told the court he was mixed up, and agreed to meet again.

Giving evidence from the witness box Taylor, who has twice been convicted in the past for sex attacks on young boys, said the teenager told him he was having problems.

"He said he wanted to get away from Park North and I showed him where my house was. We sat for about an hour and he told me more of his problems," Taylor said.

The youngster would then be a frequent visitor at Taylor's home on Stubsmead and sometimes stay the night.

Taylor, who accepted he had slept in the same bed as his accuser when he was still 15, insisted he had never touched the boy until a few weeks after his 16th birthday when he said they started a sexual relationship.

The teenager denied any sexual relationship instead saying Taylor had made unwanted advances on him while he was still just 15 year old. At the end of his trial this week for sex attacks the boys, Judge John McNaught adjourned sentencing and remanded Taylor back to custody where he has been since his arrest in July.

Judge John McNaught said he wanted to delay passing sentence on Taylor so he could consider all the factors in the case.

"I need some time to think about sentence. Mr Taylor will have to stay in custody and we will have to find a date," he said.

"I am not going to go to sentence today. It is a very difficult operation for a judge, there is a lot to bear in mind."

Taylor has also been accused of breaching an interim sexual offences prevention order by having another young boy in his company a charge he denies.

Judge McNaught said "There is this other matter; we need to know what is going to happen about it."

A history of sexual assaults on boys

CRAIG Taylor was born Martyn Chilvers in Lower Stratton in 1960 before moving to Brinkworth as a ten-year-old and going to Malmesbury Comprehensive.

After studying at the University of Wales in Cardiff he worked for GCHQ in Cheltenham but in 1988 he was convicted at Cardiff crown court of six counts of indecent assault on boys under 16.

He was jailed for three years but served half his term.

He then changed his name to Craig Kaminski and was back before Swansea Crown Court in 1990 to admit one count of indecent assault on a boy under 16 for which he was given a six-year prison term.

Giving evidence from the witness box he said while he was in prison he learned strategies to avoid contact with under 16s and getting into inappropriate relationships.

The jury did not believe him.

After serving approximately four years, he moved to Swindon and changed his name to Craig Taylor. He got a job as a signalman in Swindon followed by work in IT at Nationwide.

By 1996 he was living in Welcome Avenue, Park North.

Taylor moved to Stubsmead, Eldene, in December 2001. He was arrested at home on July 2,

2004 and has been in custody ever since.
