DIVISIONAL police are warning caravan owners to be on the look-out for thieves after 13 caravans valued at £112,000 have been stolen so far this year.

Most of the thefts have been from rural locations, including Shaw, Seend, Ashton Keynes, Box, Christian Malford, Crudwell, Brinkworth, Colerne, Grittleton, Sutton Benger and Upper Seagry.

Some of the caravans were stolen from driveways, others from farmyards and secure compounds.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Capstick, head of the Divisional CID said: "The thefts of caravans are particularly prevalent in this division at the moment, and it is only right that we bring this to the public's attention.

"I would ask all caravan owners to ensure that their property is safe, by carrying out simple security measures. This will hopefully ensure that property is kept safely, and the job of the thieves is made considerably more difficult."

He added: "I would ask people to be particularly vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to us as a matter of urgency. Someone, somewhere, will have unknowingly witnessed these offences taking place, and by working together, we will arrest those responsible."

Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour around caravans is asked to contact the police on 01380 735735 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police are also appealing for the registration numbers of unusual vehicles, particularly 4x4s or low loaders. As well as the usual security precautions, they have advised caravan owners to immobilise vehicles, use a good quality hitchlock, locking wheelnuts, padlock and heavy-duty chain.
