WOOTTON Bassett can take their season into a remarkable period of overtime tomorrow but defeat will almost certainly end their surprise promotion bid in heartbreaking fashion.

The Stoneover Lane side travel to Berkshire side Tadley for their final Southern Counties South clash of the regular season, clinging onto second place and a promotion play-off spot.

Win and Graham Stickler's side will be pitched into a home clash with the runners-up in Southern Counties North for the right to play in South West Two East next term.

Lose and third-placed Frome two points behind are highly likely to take advantage of any slip by downing relegated Minety to steal the play-off spot away.

Bassett ran Bournemouth close a fortnight ago before subsiding to a 20-16 home defeat a result that handed the south coast side the title.

And skipper Dave Floyd is determined to avoid a second dose of disappointment, after a season in which his side have stunned many by remaining in contention.

"It's our last league game, but hopefully not our last game,'' said Floyd.

"Every one is pretty upbeat, despite the Bournemouth result.

"If someone had said to us we would be second going into the last week, we would have ripped their arm off.

"But now we are second, we want to go on and get in that play-off.''

While Bassett and Frome battle it out on one side of the play-off picture, the outlook on the north side is even cloudier.

Four teams can still claim a place in the one-off encounter, second-placed Stow fending off advances from Grove and Henley Wanderers, who face each other, plus outsiders Witney.
