BUILDING work has begun at Moredon Infant School to create a new school. Building of a new school started this week in the field at the back of the existing school.
The new school will combine the current Moredon Infant and Junior schools to create Moredon Primary School in September 2006.
Headteacher Anthea Hilson, took a group of pupils to the site to watch the first stages of the work.
There were two pupils from the nursery, two of the youngest children in reception and two of the oldest children in the junior school.
She ceremonially cut the turf in the field to launch the building work.
She said: "The children were very excited and got to sit in a big digger.
"It is important for the children to see what's going on. We will make regular trips."
Mrs Hilson said it is important for children to see how the building process starts.
