FURIOUS traders in Gorse Hill say they could refuse to pay their business rates if car parking charges are introduced.
Swindon Council could bring in fees at the Chapel Street car park because of fears motorists are abusing it by leaving vehicles there all day.
But traders, who say shoppers are already being turned off by heavy congestion and the area's drab appearance, say they will be doomed if people are forced to pay.
John Donaldson, of BJ's Furniture Store, in Cricklade Road, said refusing to pay business rates to the council could be the only way of forcing it into a U-turn.
"Traders are meeting on Monday and I will suggest that we don't pay our business rates unless the council reconsiders," he said.
"It's a crazy idea because this area is already suffering."
Geri Walker, the owner of the Sunflower Caf and Top Gear shop, in Cricklade Road, said she was appalled charges were being considered.
"There is a lot of unrest here," she said. "It will be the end. There is not much here as it is and even fewer shoppers will come here if they have to pay to park."
Some businesses in the area have closed because of a trade downturn and others have been replaced by charity shops and takeaways.
Coun Maurice Fanning (Lab), who represents the area, said if charges were introduced he would press for the first two hours to be free.
"I think this would strike a fair balance because most genuine shoppers will be able to their shopping within this time," he said.
A spokesman for Swindon Council said some motorists were parking in Chapel Street all day while they were at work.
"This restricts the short-term parking availability for people who want to use the local shops," he said."We will be looking at all options to address this problem one of which is introducing some sort of charging system in the future."
Last month a car parking charge increase in Swindon caused a storm in the town.
From April 3 fees rose by an extra 10p for a one-hour stay in most car parks and motorists staying for longer faced rises of up to 60p.
Swindon Council also began charging disabled people to park in Brunel North and West and Fleming Way car parks.
