A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after an accident at a busy Swindon junction.
The man, in his early 30s, suffered a fractured skull and injuries to his lungs, leg and ankle after being hit by a car at the junction of Groundwell Road and Drove Road.
He was treated in intensive care at the Great Western Hospital before being transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
A police spokesman said: "The man was crossing the road opposite the Merlin pub from Groundwell Road towards Cumberland Road when he was struck by a vehicle passing from the Magic Roundabout towards Old Town."
Several motorists stopped to help including a nurse from the Great Western Hospital.
Anna Kearns, 39, of Drove Road, said: "I heard what I thought was a couple of cars smashing into each other but when I went out to have a look I saw a lad sprawled out by the kerb. It was horrifying. I couldn't believe it. It was just awful he looked like he was in a bad way."
Anyone with information about the accident, which happened at about 10.40pm on Friday, can phone Swindon police on 01793 528111.
