TRAFFIC police in Wiltshire are urging motorcyclists to ensure they take extra care on the roads as they wheel their machines out at the start of the season.

Many bikes are taken off the road for the winter period and now, as the good weather approaches, riders are being asked to properly prepare themselves and their machines.

Police say the bikes should be thoroughly checked with particular attention to tyres chains and lighting.

Historically, the county has suffered a high level of motorcycle casualties, particularly at this time of the year.

A police spokesman said: "Every year, bikes get faster and the roads get more crowded with other traffic.

"Every year, riders need to be sharper, more aware and at the top of the game."

In line with Government and Department of Transport targets Wiltshire Police continues to strive to reduce collisions. Its 'Bikesafe' scheme, which was launched in Wiltshire more than six years ago, gives riders the opportunity to spend a day with the county's expert police riders.
