Deaf Awareness Week runs from May 2-8 and The National Deaf Children's Society is the only organisation dedicated to the support of deaf children and young people, their families and professionals working with them.

Here are a few things everyone can do to make communication easier when talking to someone who is deaf: face the person and get their attention before you speak; maintain eye contact, speak clearly and don't talk too quickly and use gestures to explain what you are saying; if the person prefers using sign language and you find it difficult to try writing it down.

Anyone with concerns about their child's hearing or interested in supporting NDCS's work can contact our Freephone helpline on 0808 800 8880, email helpline@ndcs.org.uk or visit www.ndcs.org.uk.
