Swindon's players and coaching staff crack open the bubbly to celebrate 77134-57SWINDON finally cracked open the champagne to celebrate their Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Division triumph on Saturday completing the campaign in style with a 22-7 dismissal of Wallingford at Greenbridge Road.
Victory did come at a cost however, with three players being taken to the Great Western Hospital with injuries.
The home side started well, centre Guy Sturla booting the opening points with a penalty after Wallingford had infringed close to their own line.
Swindon's domination continued, although they were rocked when a handling error allowed Wallingford to seize the lead with a breakaway try.
The home side responded swiftly though, with a try from wing Mathieu Seynaeve.
The forwards gained good field position and, when the ball was released, fly-half Neil Maycock made a half-break which took him inches from the line where Seynaeve was in support. Sturla converted.
Flanker Ian Butcher was then on the end of a flowing move, only to have the ball knocked loose right on the line.
Soon after, the Wallingford defence were pinned on their line and, when the ball was moved wide, wing Robin Haxton put his head down to power over, but was stopped short and suffered a dislocated shoulder for his efforts.
Flanker Paul Daniels also had to leave the field with a head injury before the half ended.
Wallingford were going all out to spoil the party and the home side spent much of the early part of the second half defending.
The situation worsened as No 8 Jon Parker left the field with another head injury.
But with the boot of Maycock becoming more influential, they grabbed the initiative again.
An initial break from Maycock was stopped short, but the ball was recycled and skipper Paul Wakefield powered over from close range, Sturla adding the extras.
With the final whistle looming, Maycock attempted a drop goal which fell short and wide, but as Wallingford tried to keep the ball alive, a loose ball went to ground and wing Seynaeve was first to react for his second try of the game.
