TOWN boss Andy King is aiming to add six new faces to his squad this summer in order to provide fresh impetus for the 2005-6 campaign.
Those out of contract at the County Ground, including Rhys Evans, Matt Heywood, Sammy Igoe and Grant Smith were handed their written offers yesterday and the manager is anxious to know just who he will have at his disposal when the players report back in July.
If there are more rejections than acceptances, King believes he might even need more than the desired six extra bodies.
All he can do is wait but if some of the answers are 'no' he hopes to hear it from the players themselves.
He said: "If they choose not to stay then it would be nice to shake hands and say 'thank you' before people head off for summer holidays.
"I'd rather that than getting calls from agents to tell me the news weeks down the line.
"Once I know what players have decided to do then I can start working on the gaps that have to be filled.
"I would like to bring in a minimum of six new players in the summer, that's certainly what I'm aiming for.
"Whether I'm able to do that remains to be seen.
"If all those here agree that that gives me 14 players and you are looking to start with a squad of 20."
Just which areas the manager chooses to strengthen will obviously depend heavily on the summer departures.
For those now pondering over the offers put to them, King has made it very clear that there is little or no room for negotiation.
The manager feels players have been offered what is possible within the tight financial structure at the club.
He said: "We have offered what we can afford.
"There isn't a lot of leeway. It's as simple as that.
"We're not the only club in this boat. Finances have to be followed.
"This club has already had enough of CVA's and administrations. We cannot afford for it to happen again."
Meanwhile, Town striker Rory Fallon, pictured, has confirmed he will be available for New Zealand's match with Australia at Loftus Road on June 9.
As exclusively revealed in the Evening Advertiser, the forward had looked set to decline the chance to play in the Oceania 'derby' as he would be back in his home country on the day of the game.
However, the temptation to represent his country has proved too strong, meaning two trips between England and New Zealand will be required this summer.
