MALMESBURY cyclist Peter Lambert has neared the halfway stage of a 1,700-mile charity adventure from Calais to Rome.
Together with two Chippenham cyclists, Richard Brunning and David Bourne, the men are cycling the route for the British Heart Foundation.
The three men have a combined age of 200 years, and a new pair of hips, knees and a triple bypass between them.
They set off last Friday and are following minor roads including a climb across the Alps without the aid of a support vehicle.
Mr Lambert said they had ridden 498 kms by day seven.
The weather has so far been kind to them with no snow.
Mr Lambert said: "We have had some major problems, one puncture, two falls but only our pride hurt. We are all in good spirits and eating well. Bed and breakfasts are scarce so we are staying in good hotels."
Mr Lambert has been an active member of the Malmesbury branch of the British Heart Foundation for many years.
He got involved because he felt more and more people are susceptible to heart problems.
