THE proprietor of the Bear Hotel in Devizes, Andrew MacLachlan, is calling on all jazz fans in the town to support his jazz club or risk losing it.
Attendances at Friday and Saturday night gigs at Jazz at the Bear, as the club in the cellar bar at the hotel is called, have fallen in recent weeks and Mr MacLachlan is thinking of cutting the jazz club down to just one night, probably Friday.
He said: "January was amazing with regular audiences of 80 to 90. I thought I'd cracked it, but since then it has been a bit disappointing, with as few as 16 people for a brilliant musician like Paddy Milner."
Mr MacLachlan, who runs the hotel with his wife Angela, was already thinking of cutting back on activities in the cellar bar during the summer, so as not to compete with Devizes Festival and Devizes Carnival.
But before then he is welcoming the Celebration Jazz Band for a New Orleans jazz night on Saturday, The Gaulois Brothers on Friday May 6, the Martin Drew/Mornington Lockett Quartet on Saturday May 7, and the DS Big Band on Sunday lunchtime, May 8.
