20-year-old Ruth Morrison has won a place at one of the world's top drama schools (16934/2)CHIPPENHAM NEWS: A YOUNG woman's dream could come true if she can raise more than £30,000 to pay for a place in one of the world's top drama schools.
Ruth Morrison, 20, of Lanes End, Gastard, near Corsham, has been offered a place at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
The three-year degree in musical theatre would start in September and Miss Morrison is one of just 35 people to be offered a place out of more than 2,000 applicants.
The fees alone will cost her £30,231 and she is working at Somerfield in Corsham to try to raise the cash to cover the costs. She has also written to local businesses appealing for sponsorship.
Miss Morrison has wanted to work in theatre since the age of two and was in her first show, Hickory Dickory Dock, aged three.
She said: "My mum has always been really supportive but I think she has always tried to get me to do a sensible job.
"I've got five brothers and sisters and I'm the only one that's done anything like this."
A keen member of amateur dramatic groups, she has had roles in shows including Cabaret, Stepping Out and Animal Farm, when she played the part of Squealer the pig.
Her ambition is to be in a West End musicals and her favourite is Footloose.
To win a place involved going through a tough selection process.
"I couldn't believe it. I was so shocked. I auditioned last year as well and didn't get in so I was just so pleased. I read the letter about four times," she said.
The 20-year-old went to Royal High School in Bath and then studied for a performing arts diploma at Bath College.
She is living part time in London studying a foundation in musical theatre at Mountview.
She realises she is going into a competitive line of work but said she is
prepared to give acting her full commitment to make sure she is a success.
One of her ambitions is to raise the profile of London theatre: "I think the talent in musicals is really underestimated. There are so many people there who are fantastic."
One day she wants to work in television as well as theatre but said: "I'm not in it for the fame and fortune but just because I really love performing."
