WEST Wiltshire District Council has been forced to take down signs marking out part of a road as residents-only parking, after the county council said it owned the land.
St Margaret's Hill, in Bradford on Avon, is used for parking by people visiting the town and using the train station.
But West Wiltshire District Council intervened after residents complained about a lack of parking space, and offered them a parking permit for £112.
District council spokesman Louise Knox said there remained confusion despite the county council's claims.
"There are two bits of land off the highway (on St Margaret's Hill). The piece of land at the bottom is shown on the various registers as being in our ownership.
"The county council were quite adamant that it was designated as public highway and we didn't think it was important enough to argue.
"It's not showing on our records but we are happy to take their word for it.
"We have taken the signs down and should be able to accommodate residents in the top part."
