THE Southern League fixtures secretary deserves a big pat on the back.

At the start of the season no-one else would have foreseen Histon versus Chippenham as a final-day Premier Division title decider.

Tomorrow the two teams go head to head level on points at the top of the table.

The winner takes the title and the one automatic promotion place.

The loser faces the lottery of play-offs for the second invitation to Conference South,

The odds seem to weigh heavy in Histon's favour.

They have home advantage and a superior goal difference, so a draw would be enough on their part.

The also have the psychological edge, having thumped Chippenham

5-0 in the reverse fixture at Hardenhuish in September.

Sammy Allison, Ben Kirk and Scott Walker are all still struggling with injury too, but Bluebirds boss Steve White, pictured, travels in quietly confident mood.

He said: "We were beaten that day but we should have scored three before they scored it was just one of those games.

"But since Christmas we've lost three out of 21 and they've lost six that's the facts.

"And our team on paper is vastly different now.

"We know we've got to go there and try to win the game.

"Both clubs have been right up there all season and deserve to be in this position.

"We've achieved already getting to this point and we are guaranteed to finish runners-up at least. Anything else is a bonus."

If White fails to mastermind a win, the Bluebirds will be straight back in action on Monday, with home advantage in the play-off semi-finals.

Local rivals Bath, Cirencester and Tiverton are all potential opponents.

Though Ciren manager Brian Hughes admits his side need a minor 'miracle' to make the play-offs.

Just three points separate the eight sides in contention the three remaining places.

But the Centurions are bottom of that pack and will be looking for Bedford, Tiverton, Halesowen and Bath to fail to win and Hednesford to lose.

Then there's the matter of taking maximum points from visiting Hemel Hempstead.

"We need a small miracle but we've seen so many twists and turns this season that we've got to believe it can happen.

"Whatever happens we're determined to finish on a high."

Hughes is expected to name an unchanged side following the 4-0 win over Dunstable last week.

Supermarine have nothing to play for in their final game in Division One West but that's a good thing.

A 2-0 win over Cinderford on Wednesday secured the club's safety ahead of Ashford's visit tomorrow.

Manager Mark Collier said: "The whole place has been tense for the past month or so.

"Now we can go out there and enjoy our last game."

Dave Slattery misses out with a hamstring strain but Steve Davies should recover from a similar injury in time to feature.
