Picture Ref: 77231-44SWINDON was treated to a sun-soaked bank holiday weekend along with storms too.

And don't pack away the woollies just yet cooler temperatures and showers are on the return.

Ice-cream was the order of the day yesterday as temperatures soared to 19.8C, making it the hottest of the year.

But prior to that, on Saturday night, the sky was filled with dramatic lightening flashes as a violent thunderstorm roared over town.

Malcolm Weatherall, of the Met Office, said: "The storm was about 9,000ft up, which meant it would have illuminated a large area.

"There were several across the West Country.

"A colleague lives in Swindon and said it was incredible.

"The good weather was due to a burst of warm air heated up in Spain and France."

Families made the most of the early start to summer, flocking to attractions like Coate Water and the Cotswold Water Park.

Coate Water ranger Sue Hulbert said: "It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying themselves."

Queen's Park and the Old Town Gardens were also packed with sun-seekers.

However, after the enjoyable weekend, the great British weather is set to take revenge.

Families planning a day out today were warned to pack waterproofs and brollies as heavy showers were forecast, although temperatures might get to 20C.

More storms are also predicted.

The weather is set to get cooler tomorrow.

Police are reminding householders not to leave windows open while their homes are unoccupied.

Downstairs windows should be kept shut at night to avoid the risk of burglary.
