PARENTS are fighting to boost morale at a Swindon primary school which is facing closure.

They are organising fun events and days out to cheer up the children of Salt Way Primary School, which could close by January 2006.

James King, a parent governor whose four-year-old son Joseph is a pupil at the school, said: "Looking towards the positive things is very important at the moment. A lot of the children are feeling a bit confused about what's going and a lot of the parents are too.

"We need to deflect the children away from all that and get them back to a positive place."

He and other parents are organising a Summer Spectacular at the school on June 18 to raise money to take the children on a trip to Weymouth.

"We wanted to do something really special for the children this year," he said.

"The children get taken on trips as individual year groups but this would be as a whole school. We'll take all 180 children to the beach and the pier and to the Sea Life centre. Lots of people have already volunteered to help at the Summer Spectacular.

"We'll be having a bouncy castle, face painting and T-shirt designers.

"We haven't found a company yet who would be prepared to lend us a bouncy castle for the day free or at a low cost so we'd be really grateful if anybody could do this."

There is currently a second consultation period in process over whether to close the school.

"A final decision will be made later this year.

Mr King said staff are working hard to keep up morale at the school and that everybody there is remaining positive about its future.

"There is always a chance that the school could stay open," he said. "We are only in the pre-statutory consultation period and we are not closing yet. We are not going to give up.

"If we go out we are determined to go out with a bang."
