GAZETTE & HERALD: FIREFIGHTERS in Corsham are appealing for trailblazing new recruits .

The team is looking for males and females to take up positions as retained fire fighters during the daytime, Monday to Friday.

Station manager, Martin Hancock said officers would be at the first Corsham Youth Festival, to be held on May 14, scouting for new talent.

"We need people available to work days," Mr Hancock said. "Offer as many hours as you are able to."

The Corsham fire brigade is also part of a national initiative to get smoke detectors in every property on every level.

Mr Hancock said: "Are they working? You should be checking them once a week.

"If it's more than 10-years-old the whole unit should be changed."

They will fit free smoke detectors in your home if you ask them and they can answer any questions you might have.

Mr Hancock warned of bogus callers and said there is absolutely no cost for smoke detectors.

"We always arrange an appointment, go in uniform with identification and always go in twos," he said.

The community safety message will be emphasised at various events throughout the year, with fire engines and officers appearing at festivals and fetes in the town.

Mr Hancock said: "We want to give a bit back to the community. This is who we are; some people don't even know there's a fire station in Corsham.

"It's about getting the community safety message across. If it saves one person getting burnt or seriously injured then that's a good thing."

If you have any questions about smoke detectors you can contact community safety officer, Damien Bence on (01380) 731119 or at enquiries@wfb.org.uk.

If you would like to book a fire engine for an event or fete or find out about a job at Corsham you can contact the brigade on (01249) 712343 or pop into the retained station on Wednesdays between 6.30pm and 8.30pm, Thursdays 1pm until 3pm or the last Sunday of the month between 10am and midday.
