BADMINTON horse trials proved a success for traders and local horse owners as the sun shone and the crowds turned out to boost takings in the town and surrounding villages.
Retired sugar company manager William Russell from Garsdon saw his horse Topping finish 12th overall in last weekend's competition.
Ridden by Oliver Townend, it was a glorious afternoon for the horse who has twice competed at Badminton, because in 2003 he performed below par and his rider fell off last year.
For two hours Topping lived up to its name by being the lead British horse at the event and Mr Russell said: "Oliver rode him beautifully.
"I knew he would be lucky because his number was 32, he was lying in 32nd place after the dressage event and at 1.32pm he started the cross-country event."
Malmesbury veterinary surgeon Ali Mead was also thrilled with her horse Haka finishing 25th in the competition. Mrs Mead said: 'The going was perfect and it was a lovely day."
Sheila Boswell of the Kings Arms in Malmesbury said: "It's always a great weekend, and lived up to its reputation. Takings were up and the hotel was fully booked."
