Young skaters will finally have a chance to meet up, have fun and hone their skating skills, now North Wiltshire District Council has bought a new touring skatepark for Devizes and North Wiltshire.

The mobile skatepark, one of the first in the country, is likely to become an instant hit with children and young people as it tours Devizes, Calne, Wootton Bassett and Purton on weekly basis.

The new facility, launched on Tuesday by Coun Carole O'Gorman, will come to Devizes for the first time on May 29.

She said while she hasn't given up on finding a site for permanent parks, the mobile park was a step in the right direction. "We have moved on a little bit," she said. "I hope it will also encourage people to go out and see what a wonderful sport this is."

In Devizes the skatepark will start operating at Station Road carpark on Wednesdays from 5pm to 8pm and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm, and will then move to Devizes Leisure Centre tennis courts once the renovations there are completed.

Young skaters have been involved in the process of setting up Raw Meet, the mobile facility. At the launch Johnny Edwards, 17, and Goncalo Barata, 18, tried out the new ramps. "It's certainly better than nothing," Johnny said. "The fact that it moves will give the facility some novelty."
