IN 2004 the local citizenry and many tourists enjoyed the happy and memorable 800th anniversary of the granting of the Charter by King John.
Numerous people helped to make it the success it was, but special thanks should go to the Mayor, the councillors and to Mr Sherratt.
Mr Sherratt wrote and produced the town play, The Wheels of Time, sewed the flags, carved and painted the statue of King John which dominated the High Street in front of the town hall as well as organising many other attractions throughout the year. The Christmas tree, the Battle of Marlborough, the carnival, the steam fair and more fun was provided by the council.
Now let us persuade Wiltshire and Kennet County Councils that we desperately need:
a) much more free parking for residents;
b) Reasonable parking for shop assistants and office workers;
c) To stop building so many new houses (which will swamp the town) until adequate amenities have been provided for future residents;
d) To have the Information Bureau back in the building especially built to house it. At the moment it is housed in the library which has inconvenient opening hours and impossible parking for visitors.
e) Allow the residents to have more say in the running of their town!
