KRIS Boulton is looking for his Biddestone side to go one better than last season's third place finish by winning promotion to the Gloucestershire and Wiltshire Division One.

The Biddestone captain was left frustrated as their opening day fixture at Woodmancote on Saturday was rained off without a ball being bowled but is looking to the future with optimism.

Gareth Unwin has moved to the club from Corsham this season while all rounder Alan Low has also signed.

Boulton said: "Neither of our new signings have played yet. Alan is still involved in county rugby while Gareth is busy with work at the moment.

"Gareth is a part-time wicket keeper which could be important while Alan will bat in the top and will be used as a fifth bowler if and when needed.

"We also have some good young players coming through and the squad is looking strong at the moment."

Boulton has been at Biddestone since 1995 and is looking forward to leading them this season having taking over from Dwayne Perry in the winter.

He said: "I feel very proud to get the chance to captain them and obviously am very much looking forward to the challenge.

"Our aim this season has to be to win promotion after just missing out last season.

"To do this we have to finish in the top two and we definitely have a side capable of doing that.

"I think the side to beat this season will be Gloucester Winget and I expect to be chasing them.

"I would love to win the league but to be honest we are just looking to go up and if that is second, then great."

Biddestone second XI lost by six wickets at home to Woodmancote in their first league outing of the season on Saturday.

Batting first, the hosts' batsmen struggled to 82 all out with Mike Taker top scoring with 16. In reply, Biddestone had the visitors in trouble at 37 for four thanks to some impressive bowling from Ben Lang and Pete Knight.

But the middle order rallied and Woodmancote made it home to win by six wickets.
