Headteacher James ColquhounA 14-YEAR-OLD who assaulted two teachers after being told he was suspended has been expelled from his west Wiltshire school.

Police were called to St Laurence School, Bradford on Avon at lunchtime on May 6 after the teenager lashed out at his teachers.

The incident happened when the pupil was being escorted off the premises.

When he attempted to get back into the school the scuffle broke out.

Pc Nathan Beck, of Bradford on Avon police, who dealt with the incident, said: "A 14-year-old was excluded from the school. Teachers tried to get him a taxi off the school premises, but he tried to regain entry to the grounds and assaulted two teachers in doing so.

"He was dealt with via a final warning instead of a charge.

"There is a crime scheme we have for juveniles. He will have to attend a telling off from the inspector and may have to go to a meeting with a youth offending team."

St Laurence School headteacher James Colquhoun said: "A serious situation began to unfold. The police were called and a rapid but routine response followed.

"No further comment can be made on such an individual and private case."

Vivien Davies, chairman of the school governors, said: "The only comment I would make is that we do expect a standard of behaviour from pupils and I would hope that everyone would support that."

A regional spokesman for the National Union of Teachers said tutors were facing an increasingly volatile environment.

He said: "I think it certainly is true to say that in the last two or three years there has been an increase in assaults, both verbal and physical, being brought to our attention.

"That may be because local authorities no longer have proper resources to provide alternative education for pupils who are not settled enough to work."
