THIS is my memory of where I was when the war was declared over.
I had just joined the Royal Engineers at Lockerbie after eight weeks training. We were transported into the hills for extra training, half of the troop, including myself, went to the rifle ranges.
Word came through that the war was over so we stopped firing. We were transported back to barracks on lorries. The troop officer stopped the trucks at Dumfries railway station and treated us to a cup of tea to celebrate.
Unfortunately when we got back to barracks we realised our kit was still up in the hills so we had to stay in camp and celebrate at the NAAFI.
