Wendy Humphreys and SarahTHE mother of a woman with a mental age of eight is still waiting to hear whether a hysterectomy would be the best way to stop her daughter getting pregnant.

Wendy Humphreys has met doctors to discuss the options because she fears her daughter, Sarah, 21, would not cope with a baby.

She says Sarah does not understand the facts of life and believes surgery, possibly hysterectomy, is the only way of preventing her from conceiving.

Medics have advised that Sarah should to be injected with a contraceptive until next month when a coil will be fitted.

But Mrs Humphreys, 46, of Coronation Road, Wroughton, still thinks surgery is the best way forward and is planning to hold talks with doctors again.

When we first broke the story in March, Mrs Humphreys said she believed there were medical reasons why Sarah was not suitable for sterilisation.

Doctors have already rejected the mother's initial request for the hysterectomy, saying it is too drastic, and the Catholic church in Swindon has condemned the demand.

But Mrs Humphreys, who also has a son, Ian, 22, and is married to David, 50, is determined to persuade doctors.

She realises there could be long-term health implications for Sarah, who attends New College, such as a higher risk of osteoporosis.

But she doesn't think the day would come when Sarah would want a child.
