ST John's, the garrison church to the original Devizes Castle, is suffering the vagaries of age, wind and weather.

The parochial church council has launched a £750,000 appeal to undertake essential work to both the inside and outside of the building.

Unfortunately, the work was overtaken by events when a heating specialist condemned the heating system, which is thought to have been installed in the middle of the 19th century.

The PCC was faced with funding a new boiler and new pipes and radiators, at a cost of over £60,000. So, for the first time, St John's Church was closed last Christmas while the work was carried out.

The renovation appeal, called The Way Ahead, is still continuing. Plans include building an extension at the west door to include a new choir and organ loft. Pick up a copy of the appeal leaflet in the church or visit the website www.stjohndevizes.co.uk
