AN archaeological trench has been dug to help a proposed arts centre take one step closer to reality.
Work to survey the site has begun at Marlborough's lower George Lane car park.
Kennet Valley Arts Trust, the volunteer charity behind the Riverbank Campaign, will re-submit the detailed planning application for the building to Kennet District Council as soon as the survey is complete
Rosie Hill, the director of the trust, said: "All planning issues have been dealt with and the application will be determined by Kennet in a matter of weeks.
"A major fundraising initiative involving the whole community will begin in earnest to raise capital to build the venue."
Archaeology experts, Foundations Archaeology, of Swindon, dug the 20-metre trench.
A spokesman for Riverbank said: "New people and skills are always needed by the Riverbank, which already hosts events in and around Marlborough.
"If you are interested in becoming involved in this valuable project visit www.riverbank.org.uk or telephone 01672 512518."
The next Riverbank event is a lunch and horticultural lecture at The Garden of Alnwick, on Sunday, May 22. Tickets are available at Marlborough's White Horse Bookshop or on 01672 512518.
