WOOTTON Bassett's new Mayor says he is a servant of the people. Coun Chris Wannell, of Noremarsh Road, was crowned Mayor at a ceremony held at the Memorial Hall, Station Road.

And he is looking forward to maintaining Wootton Bassett's friendly and individual character.

This is the second time Mr Wannell, 63, has been elected Mayor by the Town Council. He was first given the honour in 1985.

His wife, Audrey, 65, was Mayor in 1999.

Mr Wannell, who has lived in the town since 1967, said: "I must admit being Mayor is much more ceremonial now, although the role hasn't changed.

"You are a servant of the people that's the job of a councillor.

"We are here to listen to complaints and praise from the people, to carry out tasks for them and to represent them and our town." Although the father-of-two was only officially named as Mayor last Thursday, his diary is already bursting with official engagements.

He said: "I am very busy but I enjoy it so much. I love people and I've been involved in Wootton Bassett's community since I moved here."

Mr Wannell, a former firefighter, now works part-time as an environmental consultant.

He thinks it is important Wootton Bassett retains its individuality.

He said: "We don't want to be joined with Swindon. I have always fought hard to keep our own identity. We mustn't kill our little market town."

He added: "Wootton Bassett is a lovely, friendly, caring community. There are over 100 clubs and organisations, which are the lifeblood of the town."

During his time as Mayor, he wants to support all of these groups and to keep the friendly spirit of the town.

Among his future engagements, he will visit Wootton Bassett's twin town, Blain, in Brittany, France.
