AN elderly woman escaped unhurt after a cigarette butt caused a fire in her bedroom.
The fire brigade were called to a bungalow in Frobisher Drive, Walcot, just before 2.40pm on Saturday when the smoke alarm, which is directly linked to the fire station, went off.
The only resident, an elderly woman, had escaped from the bungalow before the firefighters arrived and was treated by an ambulance crew at the scene but did not need to go to hospital.
Sylvia James, who lives next door, said her neighbour had come round asking for help when she got out of the bungalow.
"She came and knocked at the door," said Mrs James.
"She said she needed help, her bed was on fire."
Two fire engines went to the bungalow and the fire was put out quickly.
Station officer Glyn Moody, from Stratton fire station, said the fire had been caused by a cigarette which had been disposed of carelessly. He added that there was minimal damage to the bungalow.
