DRUG addict Timothy Powell could escape a jail term after breaking into a house in Chippenham town centre.

The 36-year-old, who was living in Swindon when he was arrested, has been told if he completes a three-month course at a drug rehabilitation centre he may receive a community penalty.

But Judge John McNaught sitting at Swindon crown court warned him that if he failed he would almost certainly be facing custody.

Powell denied being involved in a burglary at the property in Queens Square on Thursday, May 6 last year when he was questioned by police.

But after fingerprints uncovered at the scene were found to be his he changed his plea and admitted the offence.

Powell, who has a record of offending, admitted taking jewellery, money and other personal items. However he questioned the amount and value of property the householder claimed was taken.

Powell, formerly of Jarvis House, Swindon, but now living with a friend at Hill Rise, Chippenham, admitted a charge of burglary.

Tim Hills, defending, said that while he has been on bail his client has used the time to try and tackle his addiction.

"He has taken active steps to deal with his drug problem. That is the root of his offending," he said.

"He has been in touch with the Bath Area Drugs Advisory Service and a place has been found for him at Gloucester House in Highworth."

Judge McNaught said that he was adjourning the case so that Powell can complete a course at the rehabilitation centre.

The case was adjourned to July 22 and Powell was bailed to live at Gloucester House.
