POSTAL workers in Swindon deserve their £1,000 bonus, says the union Amicus. As reported in our later edition yesterday, all Royal Mail workers will get £1,074 for helping bring a new lease of life to the organisation.

Between January and March this year, 94 per cent of First Class mail was delivered to Swindon addresses the next day.

The target set by postal services regulator, Postcomm, is 91 per cent.

Jim D'Avila, regional officer for Amicus, said: "The workers deserve it they have had to work very hard and adapt to radical changes.

"It's good to see Royal Mail making profits again and it's only right that the workers should benefit too." The news comes as Royal Mail announces record profits of £537 million.

Only three years ago the organisation was losing £1.5 million a day.

Now it is making more than £2 million a day in profit, as a result of a renewal plan.

Royal Mail spokesman for the South West, Michael Stockdale, said the radical turnaround reflects the team's hardwork.

"These figures make very positive reading and I am proud of the work that everyone has put in."
