MARLBOROUGH recorded their first league victory of the season with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Woodmancote.
The visitors chose to bat and were soon in trouble as George Fox (3-24) dismissed both openers for ducks.
Ben Head (4-34) was quickly introduced to the attack and he rolled through the middle order to reduce Woodmancote to 45-6.
They recovered slightly and managed 135 all out thanks to 43 from S Junier.
In a good all-round fielding display there were also wickets for Australian Simon Williams, Tom Wallbridge and Nathan Morgan.
This was never going to be enough to trouble Marlborough's strong batting line up and in reply Pete Day and Nick Crabbe (21) put on 42 for the first wicket.
Frank Witing then joined Day and they added 89 in quick time.
Witing hit 56 off 69 balls and was out with Marlborough needing five runs for victory.
It was left to Day to hit the winning runs as he finished unbeaten on 43.
Marlborough captain Richard Turnell was pleased with the victory but is looking for his side to become more clinical in the coming weeks. "There's a lot of room for improvement," said Turnell afterwards.
"We made a good start with early wickets and there was a bit in the pitch which our bowlers exploited but realistically we should have kept them below 100.
"Batting-wise we did well but Pete (Day) was dropped three or four times and Frank (Witing) twice so we were lucky.
"It was a good result and good to get off the mark but it was a bit flattering for us."
Marlborough travel to Malmesbury next Saturday and Turnell admits he has a selection dilemma.
"My problem this week is I have to choose 11 from 12 and no one derserves to be dropped," said the captain.
"James Horton did not play this weekend but had a good game the week before and I want to keep encouraging him.
"It is a problem but it is a good problem to have."
