CALNE suffered penalty heartbreak again after dominating Tuesday night's cup final at Willand Rovers.

Ryan Pratley missed the crucial spot kick to give Bridgwater's Rob Snook the chance to win the game after Justin Messenger for Calne and Dan Forward for Bridgwater had both missed earlier.

Snook duly stepped up to hit the ball in off the right hand post leaving keeper Adam Shephard with no chance.

Disappointed Calne boss Kelvin Highmore said once the game goes to penalties it is a case of luck.

"I brought on James Lye and tried to change the game around but at the end of the day it is all about luck.

"If we had come down here and lost 6-0 it would not have been so bad but it has got to end somehow."

Calne's game started badly and the Lilly Whites were a goal down inside ten minutes when Simon Gardner brought down man-of-the-match Justin Porter in the box.

The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Chris Young dispatched the ball into the bottom right corner.

The Wiltshiremen then began to settle with Kevin Banks having an effort blocked on 17 minutes and Rob Lardner missing the ball by inches at the back post after a deep free kick.

On 37 minutes Ben Moore tried to reach a flick-on by striker Glenn Armstrong but could only push the ball into the oncoming keeper's hands.

Calne almost went two down on the stroke of half time when a mix up in defence led to the ball being pulled back to Porter but his sliced shot in front of an open goal went harmlessly wide.

Midfield playmaker Porter was a constant thorn in the Calne back line and he forced a smart save, collected at the second attempt from Shephard, after a toe-poke from 25 yards soon after the restart, .

Defender Darren Smart then lashed wide after breaking into the box before Calne equalisd on the hour.

A long throw by Pratley was flicked on by Lardner and Armstrong with his out-stretched right boot managed to force the ball past Ben Fellows in the Bridgwater goal.

Calne almost took the lead five minutes later when Pratley ran on to an Armstrong through ball but he was beaten to it by Fellows.

The Somerset side dominated the final 15 minutes of regulation time with Nathaniel Short curling a ball over from 15 yards out and Dave Walley wildly smashing the ball wide on the volley.

In extra time chances fell to both sides with Young, who later limped off injured, twisting and turning past the Calne defence only to see his left foot shot claimed by Shephard.

Bridgwater then almost scored their second on 97 minutes when Gary Rice crossed to the back post and Porter's downwards header was cleared off the line.

Smart and substitute Lye then had efforts saved before Lye should have gone alone on 109 minutes instead of choosing to unselfishly pull the ball back to Armstrong, which fell behind the Calne striker due to a deflection.

Penalties followed and as in the semi-final where they were beaten by Backwell before being reinstated, they finished second best.

The Screwfix Division One side, who will be playing Premier Division football next season after finishing second this term, ended their Les Phillips Cup campaign without a loss in open play.

Highmore said: "After their goal we seemed to settle down and played the better football.

"It's funny, if we had said two runners up medals at the start of the season then we would have taken it.

"But it is a real shame when you've got so close."
