LAVINGTON School is to ditch the grey jumper in its school uniform after pupils gave it the thumbs down.
The colour was so uninspiring some pupils at the Market Lavington secondary school did not even wear it in the winter. After consultation with pupils, parents, governors and staff a black V-neck jumper will replace the grey jumper. The new jumper will also feature the school's logo in red.
The oldest pupils to be given the choice of wearing a black blazer.
The school uniform has not changed during headteacher Martin Watson's eight years in charge.
He said: "A lot of students didn't wear the grey jumper even when it was cold, which concerned me. Students who didn't wear their jumper would wear a T-shirt under their shirt and would be shivering. It seems that grey is viewed as an old fashioned colour whereas black seems to be timeless.
"I thought the majority of people would be against the idea of older students wearing a black blazer but they weren't. Most thought it would look formal and smart."
Pupils who flout the rules on uniform will be subject to lunchtime detention. The changes come into effect in September.
