SWINDON police are warning homeowners to be extra vigilant against burglars this summer.
Warm weather means that people leave windows and doors open but police warn this also attracts opportunist thieves.
Police are urging homeowners to lock all doors and windows when they go out.
When relaxing in the garden people should also make sure windows and doors that are out of sight are also closed and locked.
They advise people to arrange for someone to look after their home when they go on holiday and to take sensible steps to make it looks occupied, such as collecting the post and drawing curtains.
Bob Walton, Swindon police crime reduction officer, said: "Most burglaries are committed by opportunist criminals.
Where a house is obviously empty and poorly secured, it will be a target.
"The lack of a car on the driveway, permanently closed curtains and post piling up at the front door are all signals that the owners are away."
