GAZETTE & HERALD: A man who made an indecent sexual suggestion to a 12-year-old girl has won a cut in his "manifestly excessive" jail term at London's Court of Appeal yesterday.
But top judges declined to free Danny Paul Rogers, of Portway, Chippenham, instead cutting his sentence to six months.
Rogers, 33, had pleaded guilty to a sexual offence in November last year at Swindon Crown Court and was jailed for nine months.
He was also given an extended sentence of two years, meaning if he put a foot out of line for that period following his release he would be returned to prison immediately.
Today Mr Justice Clarke, sitting with Lord Justice Waller and Mrs Justice Cox , also ruled that extended period too long and cut it to 12 months.
The court heard Rogers, who admits he has a drink problem, made the indecent proposal to the girl when he was drunk in July 2004.
He later told police he could not remember the offence but admitted straight away his wrongdoing.
The girl was said to be deeply upset by what had happened.
Mr Justice Clarke added that Rogers, who had previous convictions but none for sexual offences, had asked another young girl if she would sleep with him on a previous occasion.
The judge observed custody was "inevitable."
