JOE Breet enjoyed a dream debut for Wiltshire on Sunday and is hoping he will be eligible for competitive minor counties cricket by 2006.

The South African-born opener hit 122 not out as Wiltshire slipped to a 20 run defeat in their final warm-up match against Hampshire 2nds at South Wilts.

Breet became the first Westbury player ever to represent Wiltshire's senior team and after an impressive display could soon become a permanent fixture.

He said: "To play minor counties cricket you have to qualify to play for England and at the moment I don't. You have to have been in the country for four successive years and hold a British passport.

"I arrived in Britain about three years ago and am due to get my passport next year.

"I am delighted to have been given my chance and I think I did enough to prove I can do it at that standard."

Hampshire chose to bat and scored an impressive 271-8 in their 50 overs.

Jimmy Adams (99), Chris Benham (48) and Lawrence Prittipaul were the main contributors.

In reply, Wiltshire lost two early wickets for 13 runs but then an impressive third wicket stand between Breet and Michael Coles (75) restored the situation.

Coles' dismissal proved costly though as none of the remaining batsmen were able to support debutant Breet and Wiltshire were all out for 251 with 14 balls remaining.
