THE funeral of Sir Charles Morrison who was MP for Devizes for 28 years took place on Tuesday near his south Wiltshire home where he spent his childhood and where he spent his final years.

The ervice at Fovant was for family members only and there will be a memorial service on a date to be announced.

Sir Charles died in hospital on Monday last week at the age of 72. He had been suffering from cancer for four years.

Sir Charles was the Member of Parliament for Devizes from 1964 until he retired 1992.

His successor, Michael Ancram, said: "Charlie Morrison was a man of great integrity and compassion. He was a most conscientious constituency MP with a real love for and knowledge of this part of Wiltshire."

Sir Charles was a Wiltshire county councillor from 1968 and served on his local parish and district councils.

He had a son, David, and daughter, Annabel, by his first wife, the Hon Sara Morrison who lives near Devizes.

Following their divorce in 1984 Sir Charles married Rosalind Ward and they lived at Madresfield in Worcestershire until their marriage was dissolved in 1999.

Sir Charles is survived by his son and daughter, seven grandchildren and by one sister, Mary.
