THE NEW mayor of Wootton Bassett was rescued from a vehicle in front of around 70 people.
Fortunately Chris Wannell's, ordeal was staged as part of an open evening at the town's fire station.
The evening also included a fire fighting display and advice on community fire safety, a high-rise rescue demonstration and a chance to see the latest equipment used by Wiltshire Fire Brigade. Coun Wannell, a former firefighter, said: "The event was very well attended, and there was a chance to see an emergency tender from West Swindon fire station."
There was also a recruitment stand to encourage local people to apply to join the retained fire fighters at Wootton Bassett.
