Sandra Young Ref: 77503-44A BOTTLE of bubbly, a bunch of flowers and a £50 gift voucher were the prizes handed to wonder mum Sandra Young.

The 45-year-old received the gifts at Asda West Swindon yesterday after being singled out for the supermarket's Swindon Wonder Mum award.

Judges picked Sandra, of Wyndham Road, after hearing about the way she gives round-the-clock care to her son, Ben, who suffers from a rare condition.

"I was very chuffed with what I got and it wasn't as half as embarrassing as I thought it would be," she said.

"We are going to the pub to celebrate and then we're coming back for something nice to eat. But tomorrow it will be back to ordinary mum again."

Ben, four, has a debilitating genetic disease called spinal muscular atrophy, which means his brain cannot communicate with his muscles, leaving them weak and wasted.

Before taking Ben to Westlea Pre-school, Sandra has to feed him via a tube. This is repeated throughout the day to ensure he receives enough nourishment. She also gives him daily physiotherapy and, because he is unable to move, she sometimes has to get up and turn him several times a night.

It was this devotion, described in a letter by her husband, Doug, 45, and the pre-school, that won her the prizes. The supermarket also gave Ben and his 18-month-old sister, Emily, soft toys.
