WORK to build the new Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre is due to begin next month. Wiltshire County Council has appointed Cowlin Construction to build the new facility.
After further design work has been completed, work is expected to start on site at the beginning of June. The centre is due to open to the public in October 2007.
The new centre will replace the current Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office in Trowbridge, and will also be home to a local studies library, the archaeology service, museums service and conservation service, and the Wiltshire Buildings Record.
The county council has decided on the title Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre to reflect the wide range of services being offered by the centre.
Swindon Borough Council, the county council's partner in the project, will also have to be consulted before the name for the centre is confirmed.
The main aims of building a new history centre in Chippenham are to ensure the county's records are preserved to national standards, and to promote the greatest possible use of the records by the public.
