YOUR correspondent Anthony Sullivan (EA May 17) misses the key issue raised by almost all critics of speed cameras, that is the priority given to them as an alleged means to improve road safety over and above any other proven means.

For example, there are no statistics which prove beyond doubt that if all motorists drove at 70mph on a motorway the end result would be no accidents. This is simply not a statistically supportable proposition.

Regrettably, the phrase Speeding kills end of story is high octane in content but sadly devoid of the very element attributed to it, that is fact. It is for this reason that I have asked the police and Camera Partnership to publish the facts and present the evidence to support and justify the premise that vehicles being driven at over 70mph are responsible for the vast majority of road traffic incidents on the M4 covered by Wiltshire Police.
