THE saying never judge a book by its cover was applicable to me on Sunday, May 15.
My faith has well and truly been restored in humanity and the youth of today.
Having cycled out to Coate Water on a hot Sunday afternoon from the town centre, I found myself on a steep incline.
Being over 16 stone, the weight seemed a little much for my bike chain and it combusted, snapping in two.
Being miles from home and stranded I was just about to start my impression of Basil Fawlty and start thrashing my bicycle with a stick.
Before I could start I noticed a group of hooded youths, who appeared very menacing, coming towards me.
Not quite the damsel in distress, I readied myself for what I thought would be an unpleasant scene.
The youths came towards me in a rather intimidating manner.
Then one piped up "Excuse me mister, would you like me to fix your bike?"
The youths flipped my bike over and had the chain fixed in no time.
I would like to have these hooded heroes mentioned in your paper if possible.
They were reluctant to give me names but they know who they are and I am extremely grateful that in such times there are still some decent kids out there.
I am much obliged for their help.
If I have learnt anything from this experience it is to never judge a book by its cover . . . and to lose weight.
