16189/6GAZETTE & HERALD: BOX Revels will be going off with a bang this weekend as villagers mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day with a flying forties theme.
Revellers will enjoy three days of fun activities before an impressive finale when a dam of 200 cardboard boxes will be 'bombed'.
The Flying Forties Revels, that has taken six months to organise, will kick off on Saturday with the Box Ritzy Cinema experience at the Selwyn Hall. Chicken Run will be showing from 10am, with The Sound of Music at 1pm and The Aviator at 7.30pm.
On Sunday there is a car boot sale on the recreation ground between 8am and noon.
In the afternoon the Kevin Romang Duo will host an old fashioned tea dance from 3pm to 6pm.
On Monday there will be a 1940s fancy dress experience from noon onwards with fairground rides, vintage vehicles, a hog roast, fish and chips and a bar. There will be 50 local charity stalls. A GI Jive DJ will be there and a professional dance instructor will help people with the Lindy Hop, the original swing dance.
An X Factor-style contest has been organised for teenagers and the Boxy Sisters, two female singers from the village will perform Vera Lynn classics.
It is hoped the Revels will attract several thousand people.
The committee is appealing for volunteers to help with parking.
Proceeds will be ploughed back into the village. Anyone with ideas on how this should be spent should write to chairman, Stuart Cotton at Hermitage Cottage, Bath Road, Box, SN13 8TD.
