16216/16GAZETTE & HERALD: SUPPORTERS of Calne's annual duck race were as wet as their plastic friends on Saturday but the downpours failed to dampen their spirits.
Two-and-a-half thousand ducks floated down the river from Somerfield Bridge, past the library to the wharf in the race, which was organised by the Lions.
The fastest duck swooped down the course in around 20 minutes, and won its sponsors £200 prize money.
For the first time this year there was a separate race for ducks sponsored by local businesses.
Pat Thrower, Lions activities chairman, said: "It was absolutely brilliant.
"I'd like to thank all the businesses that took part and decorated the ducks, which made it a special day.
"I'd also like to thank all the people who come and support the Lions at our events."
She said the club had made over £5,000 from the race.
Prize winners were 1 Mrs H Porter and Mrs J Glassney; 2 Mr P Barber and Mrs Murray, who win £100; 3 Mrs A Dawson and Mr A Edwards, who win £50.
Business race winners were 1 the Royal British Legion; 2 Halifax Building Society, 3 Charles Faye Estate Agent.
